Classy. Bold. Bisaya. Buang-buang since 2000.
Smooth Friction came out of Cebu in 2000 with guitars, attitude, a DIY mindset, and absolutely no intention of staying in one genre. Jazz? Rock? Blues? Punk? Death Metal? Electronica? Soul? If it sounds interesting, they’ll probably mess with it. Bisaya is the language, experimentation is the weapon, and musical comfort zones are meant to be destroyed. Over the years, SF has gone from the infamous “Stupid Jazz” days to alternative rock, progressive madness, dirty blues, electronic experiments, death metal, R&B, reggae, and now neo surf punk. Their albums aren’t just collections of songs—they’re different eras, personalities, and experiments from the same restless band. They’ve survived the pre-internet gig economy, sold physical albums, invaded universities, played stages, pushed Bisaya music beyond Cebu, landed songs in films and theater, and picked up chart recognition along the way. No major-label blueprint. No algorithm telling them what to sound like. Just 25+ years of making noise their own way. And they’re still not done. With new albums pushing into alternative guitar pop, neo surf punk, ska, and more Visayan-language territory, Smooth Friction is proving that getting older doesn't mean getting predictable. Classy. Bold. Bisaya. Buang-buang since 2000. Welcome to the friction.
